I had some performance issues on a new laptop, and did some research. It turns out you can't really force the display itself to run on the secondary video card on laptops, since the displays are hardwired to the onboard card. After trying many things to improve performance, it turned out changing the power mode from better performance to best performance made the biggest difference short of upgrading to better hardware.
